One-armed bandit, often known as a fruit machine in the United Kingdom, is a gambling machine that works by inserting one or more coins or tokens into a slot and then pulling a handle or pressing a button to activate one to three or more reels demarcated into horizontal segments by changing symbols. Then, depending on how many of the symbols line up when the whirling reels come to a stop, the machine pays out by dropping two to all of the coins into a cup or trough. Stars, card suits, bars, numerals (7 is a favourite), different illustrated fruits—cherries, plums, oranges, lemons, and watermelons—as well as the terms jackpot and bar—have all been employed in the past.

The word slot machine (short for nickel-in-the-slot machine) was initially used to refer to both automated vending machines and gambling machines. Still, it was almost exclusively used to refer to gambling machines by the twentieth century. The original coin-operated gambling machines in the United States were novelty items—such as two miniature horses that would race once a coin was entered in the machine—rather than direct gambling machines. Such gadgets encouraged betting amongst clients when placed atop a bar in a saloon or similar venue. The owner of most machines, on the other hand, rewarded winning clients with cocktails or cigars or trade checks (specially produced metal tokens) that could be swapped for refreshments. By 1888, there were coin-paying machines on the market. Earlier devices had a circular display and a spinning indication that came to rest on or pointed to a number, a colour, or an image; later devices had a circular display and a spinning indicator that came to rest on or pointed to a number, a colour, or a picture.

In 1894, Bavarian-born American inventor Charles August Fey, working as a machinist in San Francisco, constructed the first coin-operated gambling machine. The 4-11-44 was manufactured in Fey’s basement the following year. It was so popular at a local tavern that he resigned and founded a factory to make additional units. The Card Bell, the first three-reel slot machine with automated cash rewards, was manufactured by Fey in 1898. When the Card Bell was pushed down, the reels started spinning, and playing card suit marks aligned up to make poker hands. The Liberty Bell, his second slot machine, was developed in 1899 and included horseshoes, bells, and playing card suit marks on the reels. Three bells in a row equalled the maximum payment. Unfortunately, only four of Fey’s more than 100 Liberty Bell devices exist, owing to the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. Nevertheless, the Liberty Bell was an instant hit with bar customers in San Francisco, and Fey’s rivals, such as the Mills Novelty Company of Chicago, swiftly replicated it.
